Partnership Program with the College of New Rochelle
Beginning in the summer of 2010, the Center for Montessori Teacher Education/New York is offering two master's degree programs in partnership with the College of New Rochelle.
- Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Early Childhood Education (birth to grade 2)
- Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Childhood Education (grade 1 to grade 6)
These are 36-credit programs for graduate students who have an interest in Montessori education and no former certification in education. Each prepares students for initial New York State teaching certification and Montessori certification at the chosen level.
Students earn 18 credits by successfully completing the CMTE/NY coursework for American Montessori Society (AMS) certification.
The other 18 credits are earned by completing additional academic coursework through the College. The following three courses, core courses for both degree programs, are planned for 2010:
| Course | Title | Dates |
| EDU 512 3 credits |
Foundations of Education |
5 consecutive Saturdays Fall 2010 |
| EDU 515 3 credits |
Differentiated Instruction | Fall 2010 |
| EDU 519 3 credits |
Literacy Development through Arts Integration | Fall 2010 |
Cost: $1600 per course, plus applicable CMTE/NY registration fee
Location: Westchester County -- site to be announced
Note: Courses must meet minimum enrollment requirements to be offered. Those that do not may be postponed until a later date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Do I need to take these three core courses all in the same summer?
No. You are welcome to take one, two or all three of the courses we are offering in the summer of 2010. We plan to offer these three again in the summer of 2011 along with additional elective courses. These courses are also offered during the academic year at the College at a higher tuition rate.
Q2. May I start the master's degree program if I haven't completed my bachelor's degree yet?
Yes. If you are currently working toward a bachelor's degree, you may begin taking master's level courses. You must complete your bachelor's degree before you will be eligible to be awarded a master's degree.
Q3. I have already applied for CMTE/NY training this year. Do I have to reapply for the master's program?
If you have already applied to CMTE/NY for the 2010-11 training programs and would like to take courses in the master's degree programs as well, we ask that you submit a new application indicating the master's program information -- the degree program you plan to pursue and which classes you wish to take this summer. This step is necessary so that we may establish the required academic files for the degree programs. The registration fee you paid with your original application this year will cover this updated application as well.
Q4. What do I do if I am already a certified Montessori professional interested in earning a master's degree?
If you already hold a Montessori credential for your desired level, please indicate that information when you apply to our program. Interested master's degree candidates who received their Montessori certification more than seven years ago (prior to 2003) may be asked to complete some refresher coursework to reflect recent updates to Montessori education. CMTE/NY will evaluate credentials earned through other certification programs to ensure that candidates' Montessori training meets CMTE/NY's criteria.
Q5. What if I already have initial certification in teaching?
While these two programs are designed for applicants who have no prior teaching certification, we welcome interest from those who already hold initial certification in New York or in other states. For more information about your circumstances, please contact Jacquie Jewett (

Q6. Will you offer Room and Board for these courses?
Yes, we will be offering Room and Board packages. We are currently finalizing the location for the Summer 2010 courses and will publish that information once it is confirmed. [as of June 6, 2010]
