Elementary II (9-12 for 6-12 Certification)
If you already have Montessori training for the 6 to 9 year age group and wish to obtain an American Montessori Society credential to teach ages 6 to 12, this is the program for you. Summer 2013 will be the last chance to attend the 9-12 for 6-12 credential program.
The renowned elementary curriculum at the Center for Montessori Education|New York combines the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori with contemporary research in teaching and learning. Our teacher education programs embody the Montessori values of respect for the individual and a community-based approach to problem solving.
The program covers a comprehensive Montessori curriculum for upper elementary students.
If applicable – students are required to do one practicum, either in a 6-9 or 9-12 classroom
After successfully completing the academic coursework, students enter the practicum phase in which they do a nine-month internship in a Montessori elementary classroom. This is a paid position in most schools. The student teacher works under the supervision of a certified Montessori teacher -- or in a self-directed classroom with the guidance of a CME|NY elementary consultant – for a minimum of six hours per day for one or two school years.
During the practicum phase, a representative from CME|NY will visit the student for three on-site consultations. This cost is included in the tuition. For on-site consultations outside the U.S. and/or beyond a 100 mile radius of the nearest qualified field consultant, the adult learner will be responsible for the additional costs of travel expenses incurred.
- Classes meet Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Two weekly required practice labs meet from 6 – 8 p.m.
This course takes place during four consecutive weeks in the summer.
