Infant & Toddler
(Birth to 3)
Summer Institute
at the College of New Rochelle
New Rochelle, New York
The CMTE/NY Montessori Infant and Toddler Program is professional training for people who want to work with children between birth to three years of age, including child care teachers, family home child care providers, parents, center directors, and social workers. CMTE/NY was the first program in the USA to offer Montessori Infant and Toddler certification. Our Infant and Toddler program is designed for everyone who cares for infants and toddlers - Montessorians and non-Montessorians alike. It teaches how to provide quality care, create appropriate environments, and nurture optimal development for this important age group.
CMTE/NY provides students with direct exposure to infants and toddlers in a working Montessori environment. Some classes are held at the Montessori Children's Center at Burke. Students will observe a year-round, all day functioning Montessori environment in action, and get experience in the interactions between adult and child, child and environment, and child and child, observing first-hand the marvels of child development.
Academic Phase
Curriculum includes: Montessori philosophy and pedagogy; child development; physical health and care during pregnancy and childbirth; design and preparation of responsive environments; child, family, and community; observation; personal growth and development; adult-child communication; strategies for managing an effective program; and issues of child care in today's society.
Practicum Phase
The practicum phase is started after the academic phase. It may be completed by working in an environment for a nine month period under the supervision of an experienced Montessori professional certified at the Infant/Toddler level. In most schools this is a paid position. A self-directed practicum phase is one in which the student teacher assumes the responsibilities of the head teacher for a nine month period. During the practicum phase the student teacher will receive three on-site consultation visits by a representative of CMTE/NY at no additional expense. Students who have practicum sites outside the U.S. may be charged an additional fee to cover reasonable transportation expenses. CMTE/NY reserves the right to require additional visits if deemed necessary. The fee for each additional visit will be $300.
Location
Only a 35-minute train ride from New York City, CMTE/NY's Summer Institute at the College of New Rochelle, affords students the exciting opportunity to spend time in the Big Apple. Many students have never seen the city before; others are delighted for the chance to return to favorite museums, shops, and restaurants.
Each weekend we host a guided trip into New York City. We cover the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, South Street Seaport, and of course, the wide array of Broadway shows - from the longest running hit to the newest spectacle! The convenience of the New Rochelle train station makes it easy to go into New York on your own. Weekends offer time to explore neighborhoods, visit galleries and museums, shop, taste a variety of ethnic foods, and just enjoy Manhattan's best.
CMTE/NY is also close to the shores and beaches of New England. Exploring these locations, such as a trip to the Mystic Aquarium and Seaport, is a terrific supplement to the curriculum. This gives us an opportunity to explore a variety of coastal life with close-up examinations of live marine specimens.
