The Course for Montessori School Management is a comprehensive program designed to assist current heads of schools and future school leaders in managing successful and exemplary Montessori schools. The course focuses on:
  1. Montessori philosophy and curriculum from toddler level through middle school
  2. Educational Leadership
  3. Principles of school management, the "how to’s" of running an excellent Montessori independent, charter or public school.

This course emphasizes the art of school leadership: building community, handling conflicts, role modeling, mentoring, working with parents, staff, and public and private school boards. The opportunity to confront specific challenges of managing individual Montessori programs and schools of varying sizes creates an atmosphere that nourishes and supports individual and collective growth.

This is a four-part course: Part I is offered every July; following Part I in July 2008, Part II is offered; following Part I in July 2009, Part III is offered. Part IV is the Practicum Phase.

Part IV: Practicum Phase
The practicum phase consists of a minimum of nine months of work for at least 6 hours a day during the school year and three on-site visits.

Depending on your educational background, you will register for Model 1, 2 or 3. Individual programs and schedules can be planned with Beverly Smith, Assistant to CMSM Coordinators, during the course.

Upon completion of all four parts, hours, and assignments, an AMS Administrator's Credential will be granted to those who hold at minimum a B.A. and who complete within a 3 year period. AMS now offers an International Administrator Credential to candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree from an international institution.School Management candidates without a B.A. will receive a Certificate of Completion from CMTE/NY.

For AMS Certified Administrator's Credential

  • Apply for either Model 1, Model 2 or Model 3 (depending on your educational background)
  • Complete all four parts of CMSM
  • Complete all related course work

Model 1
For a school administrator who seeks knowledge in Montessori Philosophy/Pedagogy and all levels of Montessori curriculum:

PREREQUISITE:
Demonstrate administrative ability to include curriculum administration, personnel and supervision, school finance, licensing, program planning, and evaluation.

Model 2
For a Montessori credentialed teacher who seeks knowledge and skills in school administration:

PREREQUISITE:
Montessori credential from an accredited Montessori training program at the Infant and Toddler, Early Childhood, Elementary I, II, I-II, Secondary levels.

Model 3
For an individual who seeks knowledge and skills in both Montessori Philosophy/Pedagogy/Curriculum and School Administration:

PREREQUISITE:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

ACADEMIC PHASE FOR ALL 3 MODELS:
CMSM offers multi-levels of the Montessori curriculum during Part I. Student attends Parts I, II, and III (in any order). Additional academic hours are also required. These additional hours can be met by attending CMTE/NY Infant and Toddler, Early Childhood, or Elementary classes, or by attending sites approved by CMSM Coordinators.

PRACTICUM PHASE:
Three on-site consultation visits to meet the practicum requirements of Part IV.

Certification for this program is from the American Montessori Society. MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education) does not offer accreditation for school management.
