Elementary II (9-12 Certification)
Summer Institute
at the College of New Rochelle
New Rochelle, New York
CMTE/NY is proud to be the first teacher education program to offer 9-12 certification from the American Montessori Society.
CMTE/NY has a long-standing reputation for excellence in presenting the complete Montessori elementary curriculum and for meeting the educational needs of a broad variety of adult learners. Our elementary teacher education programs are based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori and expanded upon with examination of contemporary research in teaching and learning. Montessori values, most prominently respect for the individual and recognition of the child's social and academic needs, are presented in-depth and holistically, as we examine Montessori's theory of education.
At CMTE/NY we believe that teacher education should be modeled on the Montessori process. We've designed our program so that our students experience Montessori learning. Today's teacher educators know that teaching methodology is not enough to support successful classrooms. Therefore, we stress community-building skills throughout the academic training. Our program models skills for problem solving, conflict resolution, effective communication and managing the challenges of today's classrooms.
Academic Phase
The academic phase is a seven-week course, June 20 - August 5, offered over one or two summers, plus two three-day intensive seminars. Elementary II is an integrated study of Montessori curriculum for the older elementary student, which includes both overview and in-depth coverage of concepts and materials necessary to prepare adult students to teach at this level. Subject areas include biology, chemistry, geometry, history, language arts, math and physics. These subjects are presented as sequentially integrated studies, enabling the learner to experience Montessori's "cosmic curriculum" and the interrelationship of content areas. Hands-on experience with materials and individually guided practice sessions with seasoned Montessori practitioners provide the vital link between theory and application for the adult student. Curriculum design is a particular focus of our training for this level. Philosophy, child development, classroom management, teaching strategies and writing process are interwoven throughout these curricular sequences - creating a meaningful and holistic learning experience for the adult student.
Practicum Phase
The practicum phase is started after the academic phase. It is a nine-month internship of student-teaching in a Montessori elementary classroom in a CMTE/NY approved Montessori school. In most schools this is a paid position. The student works under the supervision of a certified teacher or in a self-directed classroom, with the guidance of a CMTE/NY designated elementary consultant on a daily basis for a minimum of 6 hours per day for one or two full school years. During the practicum phase the student teacher will receive three on-site consultation visits by a representative of CMTE/NY at no additional expense. Students who have practicum sites outside the U.S. may be charged an additional fee to cover reasonable transportation expenses. CMTE/NY reserves the right to require additional visits if deemed necessary. The fee for each additional visit will be $300. Those schools who wish to have more support for their student teachers may choose to receive additional consultation visits.
Location
Only a 35-minute train ride from NYC, CMTE/NY's Summer Institute at the College of New Rochelle affords students the exciting opportunity to spend time in the Big Apple. Many students have never seen the city before; others are delighted for the chance to return to favorite museums, shops, and restaurants. Weekends offer time to explore neighborhoods, visit galleries and museums, shop, taste a variety of ethnic foods, and just enjoy Manhattan's best. The Elementary program plans trips to museums such as the Museum of Natural History or the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
CMTE/NY offers three choices for AMS Elementary Certification:
