"6-12 year olds test the world to see what they can expect. The elementary years are push-pull years of academic stresses and social anxiety, so they must also be years in which children find their voices in a democratic community. They must learn how to listen, speak up, and back down. For the teacher, this takes time, patience, and maturity. At CMTE/NY we try to model this democratic approach and we give new teachers some of the tricks and techniques to help them in their own classrooms."
-Biff Maier, NY Elementary Curriculum Coordinator
